February 4th, 2008 ~ Detours / Vintage Etchings

The dictionary's definition of detour is: A turning; a deviation
from a direct course; A roundabout or circuitous way or path,
esp. one used temporarily instead of the main route. It seems
like I've been running into a lot of these lately! Yesterday I
discovered a few of my etchings from thirty years ago which
presented me with yet another diversion from my focus
on painting. Now I've got folders, portfolios and vintage
artwork out all over the place. It seems to be calling me
like the mystery and adventure of a less traveled dirt road.

Quotations on Detour:

"The really happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery
when on a detour." ~ Unknown

"Enjoy life's detours. They might very well turn out to be
blessings in disguise." ~ Sandy Sandy

February 7th, 2008 ~ Universe / Vintage Etching

Can you imagine eleven dimensions, parallel universes, and a world
made of strings? It's not science fiction, it's the string theory. Some
contemporary physicists spend all day thinking about additional
dimensions that may turn out to be as real as other things we can't detect.

February 11th, 2008 ~ Save The Red Knots

The Red Knot is a robin sized shorebird that travels from as far south
as the tip of South America to the Canadian Arctic each spring to
produce and raise its offspring. To survive the last leg of its spectacular
journey, it depends on the fat-rich eggs of Horseshoe Crabs laid on the
beaches of the Delaware Bay. Each spring, over just a few days, the knots
gorge on Horseshoe Crab eggs and attempt to double their body weight.

Unfortunately, Horseshoe Crabs have been significantly over-fished in the
last decade, and egg-bearing females have been targeted. As a result, the
density of eggs available to Red Knots has steeply declined and many of the
birds can no longer put on the weight necessary to successfully complete
their journey to the arctic and raise young. The Red Knot population has
plummeted from more than 80,000 to just over 10,000. Scientists now
predict that time's running out and the bird could be extinct as soon as 2010.

Last night the PBS documentary film called Crash: A Tale of Two
Species, aired for the first time. This film, from the award winning
documentary series Nature and award winning film maker Allison Argo,
detailed the intricate relationship between the Red Knot, a bird with one of
the longest migrations on the planet, and the Horseshoe Crab, a living fossil
whose eggs sustain the red knot's migration.

Today, Monday, February 11th at 3:30 pm in Batsto Village, the state's
Marine Fisheries Council will meet to vote on whether to approve extending
a moratorium on harvesting Horseshoe Crabs for bait beyond its initial two years
since the moratorium will take a much longer time period considering females
take nine years to mature before laying eggs. This moratorium is designed to allow
the Horseshoe Crab population to recover to levels that will sustain the population of
Red Knots that depend on it. The phone number at Batsto is 609-561-0024.

Visit NJDEP's website: http://www.nj.gov/dep/rules/notices/120307b.html
for information on this proposal.

Other ways you can help:

1.) Contact your State Representative.
Send an e-mail now urging support of a moratorium on the harvesting of Horseshoe
Crabs in Delaware Bay, Virginia and Maryland. The eggs of horseshoe crabs are the
Red Knot's main food source during their migratory stopover in the Delaware Bay.

2.) Call, Write or E-mail Other Key Officials
Your state's Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission representatives will have
an important say in the Red Knot's future survival. Tell them to formally cast a vote
in support of the Horseshoe Crab moratorium. In NJ ~ David Chanda - 609-292-9410

P.S. Forward this message to your friends and family in New Jersey, Delaware,
Virginia and Maryland.

P.S. Thank you for reading my unusually long letter, for caring and for taking
action if you did.

will ultimately determine our own fate." ~ Sandy Sandy

February 14th, 2008 ~ Valentine's Day

The origins of Valentine's Day are questionable, however according to one legend, around 250 AD,
St. Valentine was attributed with secretly marrying young lovers in Rome when it was illegal for
soldiers to marry. This holiday became popular around the seventeenth century in Britain and
since the middle of the eighteenth century, it has been common for friends and lovers to exchange
tokens of affection in North America, Australia and France. Printed cards have now replaced
the hand written notes of yesteryear and there are an estimated one billion exchanged each year.
Happy Valentines Day!

The way to love anything is to realize that it might be lost." ~ G. K. Chesterton

The heart is a museum, filled with the exhibits of a lifetime's loves." ~ Diane Ackerman

All we need is love." ~ John Lennon

February 18th, 2008 ~ Birthdays

Yesterday was my birthday along with some other people I know. As always
we got together with my sister and my brother-in-law, Brent. His birthday is
February 17th too. It's nice having a birthday buddy to celebrate with. I looked
online and found this site: http://famousbirthdays.com. and found out that Paris
Hilton and Michael Jordan are also our birthday buddies. Today John Travolta
turns 54 and Yoko Ono turns 75! Who are your birthday buddies?
Happy Birthday (or non-birthday) to you all, Sandy

February 21st, 2008 ~ Determination / Hummingbirds

I believe that our destiny is not so much dependent on chance as it is on choice.
It's easy to get hammered down by life's trials and tribulations. As voyagers, we
need to rise above set backs and keep our ship on course in rough waters. Only
through continual conscious endeavor can we find our bliss and achieve our goals.

Quotations on Determination:

"The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry,
application, and perseverance under the prompting of a brave, determined spirit."
~ Mark Twain

"However depressed I may be I am not in the habit of giving up a project without
having tried everything, even the 'impossible', to gain my end." ~ Paul Gauguin

February 25th, 2008 ~ Strength / Eagle

I often think about one of the most memorable comments I ever received
about my painting. I can't even remember who said it, but I believe it was
another artist at a workshop I was attending many years ago. The person
said; "Your work is very strong. You paint like a man." I didn't know
quite how to take it at the time and often wonder about it to this day.
After all this time, I've decided to take it as a compliment anyway.

"The most subtle art, the strongest and deepest art, supreme art, is the
one that does not at first allow itself to be recognized." ~ Andre Gide

"His works were... strong, and at the same time delicate even to
evasiveness." ~ Childe Hassam

"To say that a painting is strong is a compliment. Its strength may come
from the combination of its colors or subject matter or something subtle
that not all viewers will feel." ~ Peggy Hadden

February 28th, 2008 ~ Strength / Eagle

Those of you who read my blogs, know that I have been going through
computer difficulties the past week and a half. Finding solutions to our
problems always presents challenges and requires mental strength, focus
and persistence. When one path ends in a dead end, we must be willing to
seek advise, backtrack and adjust our course. My computer issues are under
control for the time being, however I know this too is only temporary. Life
is change and it can bring us quandary. As one of my mentors once said;
"If you don't like change, you won't like life".

"The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists."
~ Japanese proverb

"Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is
rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will
overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox;
what is soft is strong." ~ Lao Tzu
